Scientific Name : Trichia verrucosa Common Name : N/a Description : Identified by Paul George: Hi Ken, I have examined the slime mould you sent me - the sporangia were still there, although they had turned to a dark colour. I can confirm that this is indeed Trichia verrucosa. The spores are coarsely reticulated and the capillitia are long, twisted (like rope) and have short-tapering ends. The only other slime mould that has these characteristics is T. favoginea; but that is sessile, and your specimen is clearly stalked. The sporangia were immature and have ceased to develop, but I would expect them to erupt with bright yellow spores in the field. For future collections, you might like to keep them in a moist chamber (a covered Petri dish with a moist tissue in the bottom works well) and watch to see how they dehisce and expel the spores (this may take up to a week).
