Scientific Name : Tachybaptus novaehollandiae
Common Name : Australian little grebe
Description : Resembles a very small duck, to 270mm, but floats lower in the water. Dives frequently and rarely seen to fly. In summer the head and bill are black, with a cream tip to the bill, yellow eye and yellow spot below the eye at the base of the bill. Rich chesnut stripe extends down the side of the neck. In winter, dull brownish, with white throat and front of neck. The yellow spot becomes almost white but is often still detectable.
Habitat : Found on open fresh water, often favouring fairly small dams.
Distribution : Throughout all Australian states, where suitable habitat is found. Found throughout Victoria. In the Park, often seen on farm dams adjacent to the Western boundary.
