Scientific Name : Petauroides volans Common Name : Greater glider Description : The largest of the gliding possums. Greater gliders are usually dark brown above, with conspicuous white underparts and a long brushy dark brown tail. Some greater gliders are almost white, but this colour phase has not yet been observed in the Park. The gliding membrane only extends to the elbows of the fore-arms, but readches to the ankles at the rear. Body length is about 400 mm, with a tail of over 500 mm. Greater gliders feed exclusively on eucalyptus leaves. Habitat : Eucalyptus forest, containing mature old trees with suitable roosting hollows. Distribution : Eastern Australia from Queensland to Eastern Victoria. In the Park, often seen on spotlight walks in Fosters Gully, where the mature Mountain grey gums, Eucalyptus cypellocarpa provide roosting holes. Family : Petauridae
