Description : |

A small bird, to 150mm, with a short deep bill. The male has a black throat (reduced in size in the winter), extending as a band of black from the bill to the eye. Behind the eye the band changes to chestnut. There is a large whitish patch on the face below the eye, connecting round the throat patch to the whitish under parts. The crown of the head is grey.The back and wings are streaked brown and black, with a white line across the wing. The rump is grey and the tail is brownish grey. The female is dull-brown, streaked with black on the back, with pale buff underparts. |

Introduced throughout eastern Australia, from Queensland to South Australia and Tasmania. Common throughout Victoria. Uncommon in the Park, but may be seen in farmland adjacent to the Billys Creek flats. |
