A tiny, ground-hugging, winter flowering orchid. Most commonly seen as dense colonies of single circular leaves, flat on the ground. The leaf is light green above, with the underside paler, with a frosted texture. The solitary flower grows on a stem of only 10mm, which extends to 100mm after flowering to improve dispersal of seeds. The flower is deep reddish-purple, shaped like a helmet. The Dorsal Sepal forms a broad hood 20mm long and 15mm wide. The lateral Sepals and Petals are greatly reduced, only 4mm long, white, almost hair-like. The Labellum is 15mm across, there is a conspicuous white boss in the centre, with the margins prominently veined and coarsely toothed. |
