Eastern long-necked tortoise
Description :
Fresh-water tortoise, sometimes encountered out of water, shell length to 250mm. The shell is variable, usually brown on top with a slight depression in the centre. The underside of the shell (the plastron) is cream withe the boundaries between the plates brown to black. The neck is long (snake-like), about the same width as the head. The eyes are on top of the head. The long neck is curled round under the edge of the shell when the animal is disturbed.
Habitat :
Swamps, lakes and slow-moving rivers.
Distribution
:
Eastern Australia from mid Queensland through most of New South Wales to Victoria and the extreme south east of South Australia. Found throughout Victoria. Rarely sighted in the Park, but seen near the Junction Rd entrance in September 2000.
