Scientific Name : Acacia melanoxylon
Common Name : Blackwood
Height : Up to 45 metres
Description : A large shapely tree, with very dense foliage. Juvenile leaves are Bipinnate, with some surviving on trees up to 2 metres. Replaced on adult trees by leaf-like expanded leaf-stalks (Phyllodes). Phyllodes are dark green, blunt, with several conspicuous veins. Flowers are pale cream balls in short branched clusters. Pods are brown and twisted, with bright pink Aril curled around each blackish seed.
Habitat : Wide range of habitats, but favouring fertile valley soils often close to creeks. Often common in wet Schlerophyll forests and rainforests
Distribution : Common throughout the Park, particularly in damp areas. Commonest along Fosters Gully and close to Billy Creek. Ranges from South Australia to Queensland, including Tasmania. A common tree in many parts of its range.
