Scientific Name : Heteronympha penelope
Common Name : Shouldered brown
Description : A large-medium butterfly, wingspan 60mm. Upper wings are a mixture of orange and dark-brown with an eye-spot on each wing. Quite similar to the male Common brown but without the conspicuous raised veins on the forewings. Underwings are mottled pale-orange and light brown, with two eye-spots on the hindwing.
Habitat : Hills and mountains in open forest and grasslands.
Distribution : New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. Less common in the park than the common brown, but still fairly numerous. More often seen in open grassland and forest edges.
Flying Season : February and March
Family : Nymphalidae
